More Smoking and Grilling Safety Tips
From the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
A grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injuries. Follow these simple tips and you will be on the way to safe grilling.
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
- There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.DO NOT USE CHARCOAL STARTER FLUID WITH OUR PRODUCTS – OR ANY FLAMMABLE LIQUID.
- Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
- There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
- When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
Smokers and Grills must be used outdoors – ALWAYS. Never use smokers or grills in your garage, tent, trailer, house or any other enclosed area because toxic carbon monoxide will accumulate AND POSSIBLY KILL YOU.
Never use unattended. Stay with your smoker or grill the entire time, while your smoker or grill is burning. Do not move your smoker or grill, or leave it unattended, especially around pets or children while it is burning. Make sure pets or children are at least three feet away from a burning smoker or grill.
Use in an area of good ventilation. Keep your smoker or grill in an open area, at least twenty feet away from buildings, overhead areas, dry leaves, overhead trees, branches, or brush and twenty feet away from any flammable object. Make sure to keep your smoker or grill away from the side of your house.
Always use with a fire extinguisher within reach – fire extinguishers must be capable of extinguishing grease fires. Make sure you also have a water hose within reach.
Use only on a hard, flat, level, stable, NON-FLAMMABLE , and non-slippery surfaces. Check that all parts are functioning correctly and that the smoker or grill can not tip over . When moving your smoker or grill, make sure the fire, coals and embers are completely extinguished. Our smokers and grills are made from heavy gauge steel. Use care when lifting, or moving. Use two or more people when lifting.
Fat will make your smoker or grill flare up. Trim excess fat from your meat prior to smoking or grilling. Fat and Grease are the leading cause of smoker and grill fires. Fat and grease will migrate down with gravity. Make sure you keep all of the areas below the meat supports and grates, including the grease trays cleaned before and after each use. Cleaning food, grease and debris off your meat supports and grates (and anything below the grates) will help prevent flare-ups.
Use long handled forks, tongs, spatulas. Long handled BBQ tools will help you avoid burns and splatters when you are smoking or grilling food.
Follow our specific recommendations for assembly, usage, and safety procedures.
*NEVER LEAVE UNATTENDED AND USE ONLY ON OR NEAR NON-FLAMMABLE SURFACES AND AT LEAST TWENTY FEET AWAY FROM ANY FLAMMABLE SURFACE – within reach of a fire extinguisher and water hose. Check your local fire code and burn bans.
